Megalithic Tomb on the slopes of Slievemore Mountain, Achill Island, County Mayo, Ireland
The Keel East Court Tombs date from the Neolithic period some 5,000 years ago. Located on the southern slopes of Slievemore mountain (near the famous “deserted village”), the tomb is aligned roughly north-south and has a huge capstone covering the southern chamber. We left our bicycles at the bottom of the steep track that leads up to the tomb. We were rewarded not only by this magnificent monument of the past, but also by the beautiful views over the sandy banks of Keel East.
